Any homework that is given should be written in your assignment book. Due dates for long-term asssignments and other projects and tests will be posted here. I do not assign homework on a daily basis. Therefore, when I do assign it, I expect it to be done. It strictly demonstrates responsibility.

Classroom Rules

The classroom rules are created by the students. We take a substantial amount of time to discuss situations that have occurred or could arise, and their impact on ourselves and others. With these situations in mind we decide, as a group, how we would like our classroom to run and we build our Classroom Rules from there.
Here's what we've come up with:

Be Respectful.
Do Your Best.
Raise Your Hand.
Say Nice Things.
Be Patient.
Follow Directions.
Be Honest.
Deal With Fair Punishment.
Stay On Task.
Be Prepared.
Take Care Of School Property.
Keep Things Off Of Your Head.

Scientific Notation / Exponents

Square and cube roots using single digits

Number Sense

Order of Operations
Rounding
+, -, x, / with integers, fractions, and decimals
Estimations versus exact answers

Percentages

Tax and discounts
Unit rates, simple interest, distances, and rate tables
Estimate using 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 50%, and 75%

Measurement

Convert metric measurements (khdmdcm)
Convert customary measurements (inches to yards, pints to gallons, etc.)
Convert time (seconds to hours, etc.)
Convert temperature (Celsius to Fahrenheit)

Probability

Mutually exclusive events
Independent events
Permutations and combinations

Graphing

Plot and identify points on a coordinate plane
Choose best type of graph for displaying data
Interpret data represented on different types of graphs
Describe positive and negative correlations

Algebra

The 8th graders will also be making a Power Point Presentation.

The topic for everyone is 'How is Math involved" in an occupation of their choice. Many sources should be utilized to find out as much information as possible about a chosen career. Sources may include personal interviews, internet research, library book research, magazines, telephone conferences, etc.

PPTs Must Have:

Title Page (incl. name and career) What type of education is needed? What other types of jobs are avaiable in this field? What are the daily duties, or routines, of someone in this profession? What is the average salary for someone working in this field? HOW IS MATH IMPORTANT? What resources did you use to find your information?

Grading Procedures and Expectations

Your grades will be made up of Participation, Quizzes, Quests, and Tests, and the occasional homework.

Homework- I assign homework once or twice a week. Since that is not very often, I will definitely grade it and expect it to be done.

Quizzes and Quests- Quizzes are given at the end of different units to see if you are understanding the information. They are more important to me than to your grade. Quests are scheduled and worth 25 points each. You may retake them anytime you wish before the end of the marking period.

Tests- Cumulative Tests are given at the end of each marking period. We will review for these as class. They are worth 100 points and are very important to your grade!

Participation- Every class is worth 3 points. (being prepared, following directions, and completing assignments)

We realize that there won't be much time this year for free reading, therefore we are only holding you accountable for the 4 texts that we will be reading in class (listed below) and 4 other books, of your choice, that you will need to summarize and present to the class in some way. We expect one of your choice books to be read during each marking period. The books that we will be reading as a class are:
